In May 1963, school children in Birmingham, Ala., marched through the city using nonviolent tactics. When they were arrested, more children marched the next day. The marchers faced fire hoses and police dogs. The images — broadcast throughout the nation — caused outrage. According to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the Children’s Crusade provided “the impetus that we needed to win the struggle.”
