You may find that students may tease other students for using correct grammar and speaking too “proper.”
Sometimes, the student doing the teasing does so because the other student is speaking differently from them. Other times, it is because some students do not believe using correct grammar is cool enough or even “Black” enough as many students in the African American community have encountered.
But being well spoken has its advantages.
When interviewing for a job, applying to college or meeting influential people, your use of standard English will leave a lasting impression. You will find that windows of opportunities will be made available to you simply for your use of correct grammar.
So make an effort to speak standard English if you are not already doing so. It’ll help you in the long run.
