First Date ‘fits: tips to help create a great first-date impression
By Natalie Jordan
First dates can be awkward – the butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling, the long pauses in between short conversation, and the potential of a goodnight kiss. The last thing you want to be antsy about is how you look. Knowing what to wear can give you a little more confidence to have a successful first date.
Here are some tips that will put an end to that what-do-I-wear dilemma:
Dress for the occasion, but keep it simple. If you’re grabbing a bite to eat, you could wear a skirt or slacks with a cute blouse or a dress with feminine details. If you’re going to the movies, reach for your favorite jeans and pair ‘em with a button-down or a slightly dressier shirt than the one you would wear to hang out at your best friend’s house. This look is also appropriate for that casual “hang” or group date. If the venue is a surprise, try wearing that little black dress. It can easily be dressed up or down.
Be comfortable. If you’re dressing up a bit, wear a pair of heels, but make sure you can walk in them. If the date is more casual, try a pair of boots, sneakers or cute flats – a staple for any occasion. Also, pay attention to the fit of your clothing. Too tight is a definite no and too baggy is sloppy. Find an appropriate medium.
Get fresh. Pay a little more attention to your hygiene. Looking and being clean will go a long way to not just boost your confidence, but also to keep your date’s attention. Your hair and makeup are just as important as your outfit. Make sure both are not over the top.
Remember, don’t look like you tried too hard, stay true to your style, and you’ll be ready to go. Yes, you want to impress your date, but let your inner beauty shine through and the clothes will complement that beauty.
